20 Fenchurch Street

20 Fenchurch Street is one of Europe’s most anticipated new buildings, and TDS Midlands is proud to be involved in such a thrilling and important project. Standing 180-metres high, the skyscraper is the fifth-tallest building in the City of London.

The design was unveiled in 2006, by Uruguayan architect Rafael Vinoly, and has been affectionately nicknamed the Walkie Talkie, due its resemblance to an outdated mobile phone (a top-heavy form, which shoots upward and outward).

What’s happening?

Costing 200 million, and welcomed for its symbolism of a recovering economy, 20 Fenchurch Street is located on the former site of Dresdner Kleinwort, an investment bank. A joint venture between two of the UK’s foremost property companies, the building will provide 680,000 square foot of high-quality offices, with stunning panoramic views of London.

It comes as no surprise that nearly 90 per cent of the available space is either leased or under offer. But perhaps the most exciting announcement is the Sky Garden. Spanning three floors and serviced by two lifts, the Sky Garden will be open to the public, with eateries and beautiful landscaped areas.

Why is it happening?

20 Fenchurch Street is located in the City of London – the heart of the UK economy – and will be occupied by dynamic and impactful brands and companies. The building is a fantastic addition to London’s impressive skyline, and its position on Fenchurch Street sets it apart from other City skyscrapers, with a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

What to expect.

  • 680,000 square foot of high quality office space
  • Beautifully landscaped rooftop gardens
  • High-end restaurant
  • Café
  • Bar
  • Event space
  • Viewing gallery, with unrivalled views across London

Our Involvement:

TDS Midlands aided in design development of various maintenance platforms with removable ladders to fit within the confined plant area of 20 Fenchurch street (Walkie Talkie building), London.

Working closely with main contractor, TDS Midlands utilized BIM technology to develop both hanging & floor fixed platforms, which were required to miss numerous amounts of service ducting, cable trays etc.

Mainframes were mainly constructed from hot rolled PFC & RSA’s, with Dura tread GRP flooring along with removable ladders. TDS Midlands designed a bespoke pivoting header connection for Hanger posts to enable easy site installation of anchor fixed connection to underside of the upper sloping slab.
