For those of you who have escaped it, BIM is everywhere. The whole focus of the industry is on BIM and in particular the big push to get become compliant before the government enforced deadline of 2016. Crucially, you may have missed that this is now applicable to any size contract through the government (previously the minimum value was £500k).

TDS Midlands has been heavily involved with the implementation of BIM for some time now and in most cases exceeding the pre-requisite government imposed levels of compliance. One such example is Chiswick Park in London. The project consisted of internal and external staircase design which was BIM compliant throughout, the modelling also took into account the end user and has information specific to the ongoing maintenance of the building built into it. Although the levels are somewhat vague, most would agree this is beyond level 2. What’s more, this project was also shortlisted as one of the BIM Tekla projects of the year for TDS Midlands.

TDS Academy has celebrated its first anniversary and with it, it’s third intake of students. The Academy, which has an innovative training offering for CAD apprentices in the architectural steelwork industry, has been recognised by many as an industry leader in training and indeed the revolutionary approach to delivering the programme to meet the huge shortage of skills within the industry as a whole.

Borne of the requirement of TDS Midlands to find suitably qualified and skilled staff to expand operations, the Academy delivers an intensive 20 week training semester at the beginning of the programme so that apprentices are able to hit the ground running and deliver a high return on investment for employers.

The latest intake at TDS Academy

Declan McDonnell, Academy Director, states “our aim has always been to serve the nationwide steelwork industry, and our next intake has certainly tested this to the full.  To date, we have had confirmed placements from as far north as Darlington, and as far south as Bournemouth – and a few in-between!  We can only teach 15 students per course, so would encourage anyone who’d like to take advantage of this scheme to act quickly to secure one of the few placements left.”

With great reports from both employers and apprentices, we are very much looking forward to the progress in 2014. If you would like to know more, contact

Project Focus – Sea Containers House

TDS have been delighted to be involved in such a complex and bespoke project in the heart of London.

The plant screen is a multi-layered system consisting of custom aluminium tubes, a cladding sheet, rails to support the cladding sheet and associated fittings, all fixed back to the main steelwork. The construction depth of the cladding was restrictive yet needed to incorporate connections for all the above and provide accessibility for maintenance, as the tubes were required to support LED lighting strips. Additionally,  the screen needed to be designed in such a way that it could be installed as panels due to site lifting constraints and, on top of all this, the screen is set on a slope (whereby the pitch varies to each face) and traverses several curves – some 90 degree curves and one ‘S’ curve.

Aside from the main high level plant screen there is a small, separate screen mimicking the design of the main screen but without the slope. This element involved its own complexities, including the need to lift the structure into place in as few crane lifts as possible and the inclusion of hatches and doors within the screen for cleaning and maintenance.

This complicated structure provided many challenges and the accurate Tekla modelling and fabrication information created by TDS was essential to the success of the project. With special thanks to General Metal Constructions Ltd.
