How to achieve the impossible !

As most people know Sir Roger Bannister died recently.

His name will endure because, of course, he did 'the impossible'. He was the first man to run a mile in under four minutes.

What most people don't know is that a) it nearly didn't happen; and b) that Bannister only held the record for six weeks.

Bannister went to the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki expecting to win a medal. But he came fourth in the 1500m and in the aftermath he spent two months deciding whether to give up running.

Instead he set himself a new goal: to be the first man to run a sub four minute mile.

What's interesting, and highly relevant, is that he didn't set out to run a mile 'as fast as he could'. He set a very specific goal.

He mapped out what was needed, the split times, the conditions, the training plan etc and he had a team around to help him, most notably, of course, Chris Chataway and Chris Brasher.

Bannister had two attempts at a sub-four minute mile in 1953 but fell short on both occasions. But on 6th May 1954, aided massively by Brasher and Chataway as pace-setters, he broke the record and achieved immortality with a time of 3:59.4.

Six weeks later, the Australian, John Landy, smashed Bannister's record with a time of 3:58.0 and to date over 1,300 other men have run sub four minute miles.

Popular wisdom said a sub four minute mile was impossible. Bannister got there by achieving a series of defined, 'possible' steps. In his case, lap times and splits.

Specificity is powerful. Breaking things down into smaller, more achievable chunks make attainment of the impossible, possible.

And Sir Roger Bannister showed us the way. RIP a great man.

Waste Chemical Disposal – not just a legal issue !

When purchasing an ultrasonic tank, the main concern is to identify the correct chemical to remove the contaminant without damaging the item being cleaned. Sonic Solutions have been providing the equipment and chemicals to successfully remove, inks, scale, grease, carbon, rust etc.. for over 10 years. We’re always happy to discuss anyone’s cleaning problems to help come up with the right solution for them.

However another worry for our customers is how they are going to deal with the waste solution generated from cleaning. The legal requirements for waste disposal are bad enough. But more and more we are requested for a copy of our environmental policy to show we are not just legally compliant but responsible in our impact on the environment. Waste disposal forms a big part of this. Minimising waste through recycling and treatment as well as legal disposal is expected. Failure to satisfy actual and potential customers you are acting responsibly regarding the environment can often disqualify you from selling to them.

The vast majority of the cleaning solutions we provide are water based chemicals that by themselves are biodegradable and easy to dispose of by simply neutralising them to balance the PH. The complications of waste disposal comes with the contamination that comes from the items you have been cleaning in the tank. Separation of solution from contaminant becomes an important part of the overall process and the process cost.

For anyone unsure on the correct processes for disposal of the waste solution, we are on hand to consult, advise, and even take over the disposal if required.

A recent new customer requested that not only we supply them with a new cleaning solution that cleaned better than the previous one, but we remove the waste solution and maintain their ultrasonic tank. We were happy to oblige, resolving all their cleaning related problems in one, allowing them to concentrate on their own business.

We hold a waste carriers licence so can safely collect waste from your premises and take it away for disposal. We work closely with a national waste disposal company so you can be confident that your waste has been dealt with correctly, safely, and easily.

So if you would like to discuss waste disposal with one of our cleaning experts then please don't hesitate to get in touch and we can offer free advice on the correct disposal procedures. Call us on 01924 495975. It won’t be a waste of your time !
